Grape Files: Muscat

0
0

Color: White

Grown in: Alsace, Rhône, Languedoc (France); Austria; Piedmont (Italy); Jerez, Málaga (Spain); Australia; South Africa; Greece

A.K.A.: Muscat Blanc à Petit Grains; Muscat de Frontignan; Muskateller (Austria); Moscatel (Spain)

Profile: Light and aromatic, Muscat is one of the few white grapes to in fact come across as, well, grapey. There’s a distinct, fresh green grape aroma and flavor profile and often notes of green pear, apricot and fresh flowers. Though often associated with sweetness, Muscats can also be bone dry and quite refreshing — look to Alsace for some great, dry examples.

Then there are the lightly spritzy and softly sweet versions like Moscato d’Asti, and beyond that the sweet yet well-balanced, fortified dessert wines like Beaumes-de-Venise from the Rhône. Finally there are the extremely rich and powerfully sweet styles, such as Australian dessert wines, locally known as “stickies.”

Two to Try: Jorge Odóñez Botani Moscatel Seco from Málaga for a dry version; Domaine de Durban Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise for a sweet, unctious style of dessert wine.
